Why compare PDF versions?
Reading two versions of a document side by side to find differences is slow, error-prone, and genuinely unpleasant. A comparison tool does it automatically — highlighting every addition, deletion, and change in seconds. This matters most when:
Contract revisions
A counterparty returns "minor amendments" — find every single change before signing, including subtle clause modifications you might miss by eye.
Policy updates
Compare old and new policy documents to brief staff on exactly what changed — not just a general "some things were updated".
Academic papers
Compare draft and final versions to verify all reviewer feedback was addressed and nothing was accidentally removed.
Invoice checks
Verify a revised invoice against the original quote or previous version for billing accuracy and unexpected line items.
How to compare two PDFs for free
YumPDF's Compare PDF tool shows a side-by-side view with differences highlighted. Everything runs in your browser — no files are uploaded.
Open Compare PDF
Go to yumpdf.com/compare-pdf. No sign-up, no software installation.
Upload both PDF files
Drop your "original" and "revised" PDFs into the two upload zones. The tool accepts any standard PDF up to your browser's memory capacity.
Run the comparison
Click "Compare". The tool extracts text from both PDFs and performs a line-by-line diff, identical to the diff tools used in software development.
Review the highlighted differences
Added text is highlighted in green. Removed text is highlighted in red. Changed passages show both the old and new version. Scroll through the result to review every change.
Export or share
Download the comparison report or use the page-by-page view to work through changes methodically.
What the comparison finds
A PDF diff tool compares extracted text content. Here's what it will and won't catch:
✅ Text additions
Any new sentences, clauses, words, or characters added in the revised version are highlighted in green.
✅ Text deletions
Text present in the original but removed from the revised version is highlighted in red with strikethrough.
✅ Text modifications
Changed words or phrases are shown as both deletion and addition — so you can see exactly what was replaced with what.
✅ Moved paragraphs
If a paragraph was cut from one location and pasted elsewhere, it shows as a deletion at the original location and an addition at the new one.
⚠️ Formatting changes
Bold, italic, font size, and colour changes may not be detected — comparison is text-based, not visual. Use a visual comparison tool for layout changes.
⚠️ Image changes
Modified, added, or removed images are not detected by text comparison. Scanned documents need OCR first for text comparison to work.
Using PDF comparison for legal and contract work
PDF comparison is most critically important in legal and contract contexts, where a single changed word can have significant implications:
Always compare before signing. "Redline" review (comparing marked-up versions) is standard practice in legal work precisely because catching subtle changes by eye is unreliable, even for experienced lawyers.
Compare the final execution copy against the last agreed draft before signing any important contract.
After the other party returns "clean" signed copies, compare against your signed version to confirm no changes were made between signature rounds.
When renewing contracts, compare the renewal document against the original to spot changed terms, pricing, or obligations.
For employment agreements, compare any updated version against the one you previously agreed to.
FAQ
Does this work with scanned PDFs?
Scanned PDFs contain images rather than text, so a text-based comparison won't find differences. Run OCR on both files first using the YumPDF OCR tool, then compare the resulting text-based PDFs.
Can I compare PDFs with different page counts?
Yes. If pages were added or removed, the comparison shows the additional content as insertions or deletions. Page counts don't need to match.
Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
No. YumPDF's compare tool processes both files entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Neither document leaves your device.
What's the difference between text comparison and visual comparison?
Text comparison (what this tool does) finds changes to written content. Visual comparison detects changes in layout, formatting, images, and visual appearance — useful for checking design proofs or formatted templates.
Can I compare password-protected PDFs?
You'll need to unlock both PDFs first using the Unlock PDF tool, then run the comparison.
