Why add a watermark to a PDF?
Watermarks have been used on paper documents for centuries to indicate authenticity, ownership, or status. The digital equivalent serves the same core purposes — communicating something important about the document itself:
Mark drafts
"DRAFT" or "NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION" signals reviewers not to treat the document as final or cite it in official work.
Protect intellectual property
Your company name or logo embedded on every page establishes ownership of original reports, designs, and research.
Indicate confidentiality
"CONFIDENTIAL" or "INTERNAL USE ONLY" sets clear expectations for recipients about how to handle the document.
Show approval status
"APPROVED" or "REVIEWED" on signed-off documents creates an instant visual status indicator that travels with the file.
Brand client deliverables
Adding your company name or logo to proposals and reports reinforces your brand every time the client opens the file.
Track document versions
"Version 2.1 — Internal Review" or "Beta" helps recipients know which iteration they're looking at without opening a changelog.
Text watermarks vs image watermarks
There are two main watermark types — each suited to different purposes:
Text watermarks
Best for
- Fast to create — type your text directly
- Easy to update (just change the text)
- Scales perfectly at any resolution
- Ideal for: DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, APPROVED, version labels
Considerations
- Less brand presence than a logo
- Standard-looking without custom font styling
Image watermarks
Best for
- Show your logo or brand mark on every page
- More visually distinctive
- Ideal for client deliverables, branded reports, proposals
Considerations
- Requires a PNG/SVG logo file
- Image quality affects watermark clarity
How to add a watermark to a PDF
YumPDF's watermark tool processes everything in your browser — your document never leaves your device:
Open the Watermark PDF tool
Go to yumpdf.com/watermark-pdf. No account required, no software to install.
Upload your PDF
Drag your document onto the drop zone. A page preview loads so you can see how your watermark will look before applying it.
Enter watermark text or upload an image
Type your text (e.g. "DRAFT", "CONFIDENTIAL", your company name) or upload a PNG logo. Set your preferred font size, opacity, and rotation angle.
Choose position and coverage
Select where the watermark appears — centered diagonal is the most common, but you can also position it in a corner for logo branding.
Apply and download
Click "Add Watermark". The watermarked PDF downloads immediately, with your mark applied consistently to every page.
Customising your watermark
The settings that matter most for a professional result:
Opacity
20–30% is the standard range for a clearly visible but non-obstructive watermark. Go higher for DRAFT marks you want to be unmissable.
Rotation
45° diagonal is the most common — it makes the watermark hard to crop out while keeping the main content readable.
Font size
Large enough to be legible at arm's length when printed. For A4/Letter documents, 60–80pt covers the page without overwhelming it.
Position
Center for status marks (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL). Corner for logos and branding — bottom-right is the most common logo position.
Coverage
"All pages" is standard. Some tools let you exclude the cover page — useful for branded deliverables where the cover already has your logo.
Colour
Grey or light blue for subtle professional watermarks. Red for urgent status marks like URGENT or DO NOT DISTRIBUTE.
Privacy note: Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. It is never uploaded to any server. You can watermark confidential documents without any risk of exposure.
FAQ
Can someone remove the watermark?
A determined person with paid tools can remove most software-applied watermarks. Watermarks are a deterrent and an indicator, not DRM. For strong access control, combine a watermark with password protection.
Will the watermark appear on every page?
Yes. YumPDF applies the watermark to every page in the document by default, ensuring consistent coverage throughout.
Can I watermark a scanned PDF?
Yes. The watermark is added as an overlay layer on top of whatever content is already on the page — text-based, image-based, or scanned.
Does watermarking change the file size much?
A text watermark adds a negligible amount to file size (a few KB). An image watermark adds slightly more depending on the logo file, but typically under 100 KB.
Can I remove a watermark I added earlier?
If you applied the watermark with YumPDF or a similar tool, removing it afterwards is not straightforward — there is no simple "undo". Apply watermarks to copies of your originals, not the originals themselves.
